When thinking of Lourdes, the first images that come to mind are undeniably those of the Grotto, the Esplanade, and the torchlight processions. Yet, you only have to look up slightly to realize that the Marian city is literally nestled in the hollow of a spectacular green setting.
Looking to take a break far from the hustle and bustle of the city center? Are you looking for a great hike in Lourdes or a simple Sunday stroll to get a breath of fresh air? Follow us! From surrounding peaks to stretches of glacial water, we take you to discover the wild and natural side of the Hautes-Pyrénées.

It is often forgotten, but Lourdes is a true gateway to the Pyrenean valleys. The town is the ideal base camp for lovers of the great outdoors. No need to drive for hours to find marked trails, dense forests, or breathtaking panoramas: nature begins right where the last streets of the city center end. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or a family in search of a bucolic stroll, the playground is immense.
Impossible to miss! Recognizable by the large illuminated cross crowning its summit at nightfall, the Pic du Jer is the iconic mountain of Lourdes. From its altitude of 1,000 meters, it watches over the town and offers a nature experience not to be missed.
To reach the summit, there are two ways to go.
The gentle option: take the historic funicular. Built in 1900, this charming wooden carriage whisks you to the top in about fifteen minutes. The ride itself is already a mini-adventure that will delight children (and relieve tired calves).
The sporty option: wondering how to walk up the Pic du Jer? A well-marked hiking trail winds through the undergrowth. Allow about 1h30 to 2h of ascent for good walkers. The elevation gain is quite demanding, but the shade of the forest makes the climb very pleasant, especially in summer.
Once at the top, the reward is immediate. A short botanical trail leads you to the observatory. From this viewpoint, the view is magnificent: you overlook the town of Lourdes, the Argelès-Gazost valley, and on a clear day, you can see Tarbes, Pau, as well as the majestic central Pyrenees range.
Don’t head back down just yet! The summit hides another treasure: the highest developed caves in Europe. A fascinating guided tour immerses you into the depths of the mountain to discover stalactites and the chasm.
Just a few kilometers from the bustle of the Sanctuary lies a true haven of peace: Lake Lourdes. This 50-hectare glacial lake is the favorite meeting place for locals as soon as the warm weather arrives.
If you are looking for an easy walk, walking around Lake Lourdes is made for you. It is an approximately 6-kilometer loop, almost entirely flat, which takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete.
The route is perfectly developed: you will alternate between a shaded forest path and superb wooden boardwalks crossing the peat bog (a Natura 2000 classified protected area, rich in exceptional flora and fauna). It is the ideal walk to unwind at the end of the day or for a quiet morning with children or a stroller.
In summer, the lake turns into a real leisure base. Swimming is supervised (which is rare and valuable for a mountain lake)! You can rent pedal boats, canoes, or stand-up paddleboards to glide peacefully across the water.
For epicureans, the vast lawns bordering the shores are an invitation to picnic. If you haven’t prepared anything, the waterfront restaurant offers a terrace with a breathtaking view to sip a drink or savor a local specialty.
Less known to passing visitors but popular with locals, the Voie Verte des Gaves starts in Lourdes. Built along the route of a former railway line, it connects Lourdes to Pierrefitte-Nestalas over nearly 18 kilometers.
The huge advantage of this route? It is fully paved and presents no difficult elevation gain. Hop on a rental bike in the town center, or simply set off on foot for a few kilometers. You will follow the river (the Gave de Pau) while gradually venturing into the heart of the lush green mountains. A guaranteed change of scenery in complete safety.
Your ideal base camp in the heart of Lourdes
After a great hike up in the heights or a day out in the fresh air around the lake, there is nothing like returning to the comfort of a true home. Our Pavillon Bleu apartments offer you the perfect space to relax your tired legs, take a nice hot shower, and prepare a comforting meal in your fully equipped kitchen. The perfect balance between adventure during the day and coziness in the evening!
The Pyrenean nature is magnificent, but it still requires a little preparation to enjoy it with peace of mind.
A good pair of sneakers or hiking shoes (essential if you choose to hike up the Pic du Jer on foot).
A well-filled water bottle, as water points become scarce once outside the town.
Several layers of clothing: the weather changes very quickly in the valleys. A light windbreaker or a fleece will never be wasted in your backpack, even if the sun is shining when you set off.
For the Pic du Jer, the funicular departure station is easily accessible on foot from the town center (about a 20-minute walk) or via the regular lines of the local MonCitybus network.
For Lake Lourdes, located a little further out, it is served very regularly by the summer shuttles of the bus network. The more active visitors can even go there by renting a bike (e-bike or standard) from the town center.
And if these first walks have given you a taste for adventure, don’t hesitate to take the car to explore the major sites of the Hautes-Pyrénées, such as the breathtaking Cirque de Gavarnie or the legendary Pont d’Espagne.
