Are you planning to visit Lourdes soon and feeling a little overwhelmed by the sheer size of the grounds? That’s perfectly normal. With its dozens of hectares, three basilicas built one above the other, and millions of annual visitors, the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes feels like a small town within the city.
To ensure your stay is as peaceful as possible, thorough preparation is essential. As locals, we’ve gathered all the essential information, the schedules you need to know, and our best tips to help you have an unforgettable experience, free from the stress of planning. Follow the guide!

One of the most frequently asked questions concerns visiting hours. The good news is that the site is designed to welcome pilgrims and visitors during very extended hours.
These hours allow you to enjoy the Grotto in the glow of dawn, or to find peace and quiet there in the absolute stillness of the night, long after the crowds have left.
Let's not beat around the bush: finding a parking spot right outside the Sanctuary's gates in the middle of August can quickly become a headache. The nearest paid public parking lots (such as the Esplanade parking lot or the Peyramale parking lot) fill up very quickly.
Our expert tip: Avoid driving! By choosing accommodations strategically located in the heart of the city, you’ll save yourself the hassle. From our property, Le Pavillon Bleu, you’re just a 9-minute walk from the main entrance. You can leave your car parked safely and head to the Sanctuary with peace of mind.
This is a broad topic, but there are several key points that deserve your full attention.
This is where it all began in 1858. The Grotto of Massabielle is the heart of the Shrine. Even when it’s crowded, an indescribable atmosphere of peace reigns here. You can walk silently forward to touch the rock wall—smoothed by the millions of hands that have rested there before yours—and watch the spring flow at the back of the cave.
The water of Lourdes is an integral part of the experience. Following major renovations in recent years, the ritual has evolved. Today, the focus is largely on the “act of using the water”: you are invited to wash your hands and face and to drink the water from the spring.
Dozens of freely accessible fountains are lined up just past the Grotto. Be sure to bring a water bottle or a small bottle to fill; it makes a much-appreciated symbolic souvenir to bring back to your loved ones.
The estate’s architecture is breathtaking and consists of three major buildings you won’t want to miss:
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary: This is the one you see as you arrive, recognizable by its elliptical ramps and its Roman-Byzantine style. Its interior mosaics are true masterpieces.
The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception: perched above the first, it soars toward the sky with its slender spire. Its stained-glass windows depict the story of the apparitions.
The Basilica of St. Pius X: Entirely underground and built of reinforced concrete, it is invisible from the Esplanade. It is one of the largest churches in the world, capable of accommodating more than 25,000 people.
Extend your stay in the Pyrenees in utter comfort
After a busy day exploring the streets and shrines of Lourdes, you deserve a rest without any compromises. Don’t rush back on the road—unpack your bags at the Pavillon Bleu. Enjoy a completely self-service check-in, fully equipped kitchens so you can dine at your own pace, and deeply restful nights just a 9-minute walk from the Grotto.
Life in Lourdes revolves around celebrations. Even if you're just passing through, attending one of these events is a memorable cultural and personal experience.
Masses are celebrated throughout the day in various languages and at different basilicas. The famous Rosary in French, broadcast around the world, is generally held every day at 3:30 p.m. right at the Grotto.
Since the schedule may vary depending on the pilgrimages taking place, we recommend checking the bulletin board located at the Information Center as soon as you pass through the Saint-Michel Gate. Keep in mind that crowd levels and the schedule of celebrations can vary considerably depending on the different pilgrimages to Lourdes organized throughout the year.
If there’s one event you absolutely mustn’t miss, it’s this one. From April through October, every evening at 9:00 p.m., thousands of people gather with lit candles to march and sing along the Esplanade. As night falls, this river of light offers a spectacle of striking beauty and fervor.
If you're looking for peace and quiet, avoid August and the Assumption weekend! May, June, September, and October offer mild weather and much more pleasant crowds. On a typical day, the estate is particularly peaceful before 9:00 a.m. or after 10:00 p.m.
The Lourdes complex is a model of accessibility. If you or a loved one has difficulty walking, please note that the Sanctuary provides blue cars (the famous wheelchairs typical of Lourdes) free of charge at the entrance to the complex. Ramps, elevators, and smooth walkways provide easy access to virtually all areas, including the upper basilicas.
The Shrine is a place of private worship and contemplation. As such, appropriate attire is required. Avoid very short shorts, swimsuits, or tank tops with deep necklines, or you may be denied entry by the guards. Just be sure to cover your shoulders and wear respectful clothing. Finally, silence is expected, especially near the Grotto of Massabielle.
